    An innocent young baby boy whose private part was cut off by his ‘evil’ step-mother, would undergo his next surgery, a p*nis transplant, when he reaches puberty.

    While speaking with correspondents on Tuesday, Suleiman Makusidi, the Head of Medical Unit of the state Child Rights Protection Agency, at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Bida, Niger state, said that 9-month-old Buhari Muhammad, whose private part was cut off by his step-mother in June 2016, would undergo his next surgery, a p*nis transplant, when he reaches puberty.

    Recall that Muhammad’s private part was cut off by his 17-year-old step mother, Bara’atu Muhammad, when the boy was barely a month old.

    The incident occurred in Dafe community in Shiroro Local Government area of Niger in June 2016.

    The step-mother had confessed that she took the action because she was jealous and she also wanted to get back at the victim’s mother whom she claimed was always insulting her.

    We had reported some weeks ago that the baby underwent first corrective surgery at the Federal Medical Centre, Bida, Niger, as part of the series of operations that the boy would undergo before he can use his manhood effectively.

    Suleiman Makusidi while speaking with newsmen, said: “When the boy reaches puberty and when blood has started flowing through his p*nis, a transplant will be carried out; the transplant will be carried out either in Nigeria or abroad.

    “The corrective surgery that was done in February was to reopen the hole that was created for the boy to pass urine after it was discovered that the hole was closing back.

    “The urinary passage, which was created like that of the female, is a temporary one to enable him pass urine.

    “The state government is making arrangements on how to bring medical experts to examine the boy and see if the transplant can be done in Nigeria. If not, we will look at other options like South Africa or the U.S.

    “We are hoping that the transplant will be successful and that it will help his reproductive system because his testicles were cut off alongside his p*nis; only one testicle was left,” he said.

    According to Makusidi, Muhammad will use his p*nis effectively after a successful transplant.

    Acting President Yemi Osinbajo yesterday inaugurated Justice Walter Onnoghen as the new Chief Justice of Nigeria with a call on him to restore confidence in the ‎country’s judiciary.

    “The mere perception of judicial malfeasance poisons the waters of justice let alone the reality, while delays in the administration of justice often defeats the end of justice,‎” Osinbajo told Onnoghen.

    The inauguration was a befitting end for the citizens’ insistence on the confirmation of Onnoghen as the substantive CJN. But that Onnoghen emerged as the CJN after this campaign imposes on him the necessity of justifying the citizens’ confidence by ensuring that justice is dispensed by the judiciary at all times.

    At the event held in the Council Chambers of the Presidential Villa yesterday, Osinbajo ‎said the new CJN was assuming the position at a time Nigerians ‎had lost confidence in the activities of the judiciary, hence the need to resuscitate that confidence that the people want to have in the institutions of government.
    The acting president noted that Onnoghen came when all arms of government had suffered a loss of respect of the people .

    He said: “When lords and justices of our courts are called upon to resuscitate that confidence that the people ‎of this nation want to have in the institutions of government and indeed in the judiciary, the responsibility is an awesome one. It is the closest that man serves as the Almighty God having powers of lives, livelihoods and futures, having power to give and indeed to take away power, and authority to supervise all men and women to whom our law and constitution have given the position of judgeship.

    “Since we do not force men and women to be judges, they voluntarily take on the position of high priests in the temple of justice. They will of course be held to a much higher standard, a much higher moral and ethical standard than the rest of us. They must not only be seen to be just, they must be just indeed.

    “Yesterday I had a discussion with President Buhari, not only did he extend his personal warm wishes and congratulations, he asked that I personally convey that to you, and I do so now.

    “I congratulate you on behalf of Mr. President, all members of your family and the entire judiciary. I believe that the choice that the people of this nation have made is a right one indeed and I pray that you will leave up to all of the expectations.”

    President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki who fielded questions after the inauguration said: “We want to see a judiciary that will also cooperate with other arms of government in doing a lot of reforms. And I think he has about four years, and that gives time for a lot of reforms in the judiciary.
    “I am confident that with time on his side and his commitment to some of the issues he has talked about in trying to ensure that the judiciary is independent, a lot is expected of him.

    We wish him all the best.

    “The same way, we need to give support, for example, to the constitutional review ‎that will also address some of the issues that will make the judiciary more efficient.”

    Earlier in the Council Chamber, Justice Onnoghen promised to adhere to the rule of law in the dispensation ‎of justice throughout his tenure.

    “As the head of the judiciary, I assure you that from the past experience, the key to everything in a democratic setting is adherence to the rule of law. There lies the solution to our problems. Let us try to encourage the independence of the judiciary so as to ensure the rule of law,” he said.

    Onnoghen attributed the relative peace despite the controversy which trailed his confirmation, to Nigerians ‎who kept faith and prayed without ceasing, including fasting to ensure his inauguration as substantive CJN.

    “To Nigerians of all walks of life, of all faiths, who have kept faith with this, who had prayed without ceasing, some had even fasted, I say thanks very much.

    “I urge you to continue to pray for this country because if you notice, there has been peace. All that pressure that was mounting everything just died down and that is to the glory of God. I’m eternally grateful to Nigerians.

    “I’m very much grateful to God and Mr. President and to the Senate for finding me worthy. I had earlier on November 10, 2016 been sworn in as the acting Chief Justice by the president, today happens to be the final milestone and I am very much grateful.

  • WARNING: Stop Using Bleaching Creams - NAFDAC

    The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, yesterday, expressed concern over the alarming use of bleaching creams and skin whitening agents.

    NAFDAC also warned that such chemicals, aside from causing cancer, could lead to psychiatric and kidney problems.

    It equally warned against the continued use of banned chemicals by unscrupulous cosmetics manufacturers.

    Reading what seemed like a riot act in Lagos during the first NAFDAC’s Good Manufacturing Practice, GMP, training for cosmetics and medical devices manufacturers in Lagos, Director-General of the agency, Dr. Paul Orhii, said the use of glutathione intravenous as a skin whitener was unsafe and might result in serious consequences, including cancer.

    He expressed concern that the urge to satisfy customers’ ever-increasing demands and the bid to make profits had driven some cosmetics manu-facturers into experimenting with raw materials with little or no safety records.

    Orhii vowed that the agency would not hesitate to shut down any company, which failed to comply with good manufacturing practice or caught with the banned chemicals.

    He said: “Skin bleaching is a cosmetic treatment to reduce the prominence of skin discolourations and even out skin colour.

    “Some people apply skin lightener to their entire body to change their complexion, but this can be very risky. The active ingredient in some skin lighteners is mercury and so bleaching can lead to mercury poisoning.”

    MIAMI (AFP) - 

    A more aggressive approach to lowering blood pressure could help millions of people over age 50, according to the results of a major US study published Monday.

    Patients who lowered their systolic number, meaning the higher of the two figures used to express blood pressure, to less than 120 mm Hg saw their risk of heart attack, heart failure or stroke drop by 24 percent, and their risk of death plummeted by 27 percent.

    Current guidelines urge adults to keep their blood pressure below 140 mm Hg.

    In September, the National Institutes of Health-sponsored study was stopped a year early due to the positive results. On Monday, a detailed report on its findings was published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

    "The positive results of this trial have taken most investigators by surprise, and the strong benefits of treatment seem to outweigh the risks," said co-author Alfred Cheung, chief of nephrology and hypertension at University of Utah Health Care.

    However, more research is needed before health authorities can recommend a change to current guidelines.

    "Before deciding to treat blood pressure aggressively, it may be prudent to wait until additional questions are answered," Cheung added.

    The treatment, which involves using medications to lower blood pressure along with healthy lifestyle choices, also came with an increased risk for some serious side effects, including blood pressure that fell too low, fainting, and kidney problems.

    Researchers are also still investigating how the treatment might affect cognition, dementia and kidney disease.

    The study involved more than 9,300 people who were randomly assigned to a blood pressure target of either 120 mm Hg or 140 mm Hg.

    All the study participants were aged 50 or older and had faced an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, having a systolic blood pressure of at least 130 mmHg.

    They also had no history of diabetes or stroke, a requirement which made the study population majority white, and tended to exclude many African Americans and Hispanics.

    About 16.8 million people in the United States would fit the study and criteria and therefore might benefit from the approach, researchers said.

    "Given that millions of US adults meet SPRINT eligibility criteria, the implementation of SPRINT recommendations could have a profound impact on how blood pressure is treated in this country," said senior author Paul Muntner, a professor of epidemiology at the University of Alabama.

    "Even more important, is its potential for greatly reducing the incidence of cardiovascular disease."

    More than one billion people worldwide have hypertension, which is defined as a systolic blood pressure of 140 or more, over a diastolic blood pressure of 90 or higher.

    Some women who go braless may actually have the right idea, and this has been suggested by new research.  According to the results of a 15-year study in France (It should be noted the study does not mention breast size), bras provide no benefits to women and may actually be harmful to breasts over time. Jean-Denis Rouillon, a professor at the University of Franche-Comté in Besançon stated, "Medically, physiologically, anatomically, the breast does not benefit from being deprived of gravity."

    Rouillon measured and examined the breasts of more than 300 women, aged 18 and 35, taking note of how the additional support provided by bras affects the body over time. Overall, he found that women who did not use bras benefited in the long term, developing more muscle tissue to provide natural support. Rouillon also noticed that nipples gained a higher lift, in relation to the shoulders, on women who went braless. The study concluded that when bras are worn, the restrictive material prevents such tissue from growing, which may actually accelerate sagging, .

    But don't throw away your bras just yet, ladies, because despite the findings, Rouillon said it would be dangerous to advise all women to trash their bras based on the study's sample, which may not be representative of the population.     Yet, it can be a huge part of one's personal life and the sources we do get info from are, well, far from scientific.

    Let's tackle it.
    Have no illusions: Kissing is important
    Research shows kissing frequency correlates with relationship satisfaction.

    Overall, the researchers showed that the amount a couple kissed was proportional to their stated level of relationship satisfaction.

    59% of men and 66% of women have ended a relationship because someone was a bad kisser.

    The first kiss is a necessary risk in every budding sexual relationship; a recent psychology study found that 59 percent of men and 66 percent of women reported breaking things off with a prospective partner because of it.

    People remember their first kiss more vividly than the first time they had sex.

    Psychologist John Bohannon from Butler University has found that most of us can recall up to 90 percent of the details of a first romantic kiss. In his study of five hundred people, most remembered this experience more vividly than their first sexual encounter.

    Movies like 'Pretty Woman' have said that prostitutes don't kiss on the mouth because it's too intimate.

    And that's actually true.
    Refraining from mouth-to-mouth kissing has been common among women of the 'oldest profession' for a very long time. Social scientists Joanna Brewis and Stephen Linstead report that prostitutes often won't kiss because it requires a 'genuine desire and love for the other person.' By avoiding the lips of a client, they are best able to keep emotions out of their work.

    Men who kiss their wives before work live 5 years longer, make 20-30% more money and are far less likely to get in a car accident.

    A ten-year psychology study undertaken in Germany during the 1980s found that men who kissed their wives before leaving for work lived, on average, five years longer, earning 20 to 30 percent more than peers who left without a peck good-bye. The researchers also reported that not kissing one's wife before leaving in the morning increased the possibility of a car accident by 50 percent. Psychologists do not believe it's the kiss itself that accounts for the difference but rather that kissers were likely to begin the day with a positive attitude, leading to a healthier lifestyle.

    Why do we kiss?
    Kissing is how we test if someone would (biologically) be a good mate.

    A good deal of the scientific literature speculates that kissing may have evolved to help us choose a suitable partner, or to realize when a match is a bad idea…The exchange of olfactory, tactile, and postural information might trigger unconscious mechanisms that guide us in deciding whether we should continue, and a kiss might even tell us about a potential partner's level of commitment and genetic compatibility.

    Research highlighted in The Science of Kissing: What Our Lips Are Telling Us shows a big gender divide in how kissing is perceived.

    Women were far more likely to see kissing as a good way to assess a potential mate or to initiate, maintain, and monitor a long-term relationship. They also rated the breath and taste of a man's kiss as highly significant in determining whether to keep on kissing him in the moment or the future. Women were far more interested in healthy-looking teeth, and reported valuing the experience of kissing much more than men did— before, during, and after a sexual encounter. Men, on the other hand, were much less picky about kissing and far more interested in facial and bodily attractiveness.

To get this close, there must be some level of trust or expectation.Thus delivering a friendly kiss or sniff, or receiving one, amounts to an unspoken gesture of acceptance.

    Open your mouth more. Research shows men prefer 'wetter kisses with more tongue action.'

    Initiate more.
    Be more aggressive with your tongue and take an active part in the kiss.

    You could probably sum them all up by saying: Stop holding back.

    Advice For men
    Here are my takeaways from the findings in The Art of Kissing:

    Don't jam your tongue down her throat. This was women's most frequent complaint. You're kissing her, not trying to implant an alien embryo in her stomach.

    Keep your ears attuned to her breathing. Bluntly, make sure you're allowing her to breathe. Women tend to enjoy kissing more when they're not being suffocated.

    'Listen' to the way she's kissing. Match her tempo. Reply to her tongue action with similar tongue action. Leading and being aggressive can be good but being oblivious is bad.

    Also, aligning with the research on hygiene, take care of your teeth, use mouthwash and carry mints.

    No matter how attractive someone may be, poor hygiene can kill the moment before it even begins. This is particularly true for men. As preceding chapters have described, women depend heavily on taste and smell and pay close attention to teeth when evaluating a partner.

    A few other tips from an interview with William Cane, author of The Art of Kissing:

    '53% of women prefer (to kiss) a clean-shaven man.'

    'Women's favourites spot to be kissed, other than the mouth, is the neck.Ninety-six percent of women reported that they like neck kisses, while only about 10% of men do.'

    'Women also complain that men don't do enough variations in kissing, that they're too machine-like or repetitive. Women would like a number of different kisses: the neck, the ears, 'liposuction,' which is moving from the upper lip to the lower lip…be creative.'

    And It's not all about technique
    As Sun Tzu said, 'all wars are won or lost before they are ever fought.' By and large, the same is true about kissing.

    You can be a great kisser but behave in a way that makes sure no one ever wants to kiss you. Circumstances can hamper things as well.

    The Science of Kissing: What our lips are telling us addresses a number of these factors:

    Set the stage. Getting to know one another eases awkwardness and lays the groundwork for a hormonal profile conducive to intimacy. Love researcher Arthur Aron has a list of questions shown to make people bond almost instantly.
